Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, was a man who had joined Gandhiji in his struggle against the British. However later down the line he never approved ways of Gandhi and moved out to get his own way and get the British out. There have been 2 instances after this that Netaji was elected as the President of the Congress party and he won this against Gandhiji.
Gandhji was never happy with the fact that Subhash Chandra Bose was more popular than him and that he had lost the President seat for the Congress party. All said and done, this was politics after all. Something had to be done, to make himself (Gandhiji) more popular than Subhash. The truth is shocking.

Firstly,Netaji always said that Gandhiji's value could not be understated. Secondly, to say that Netaji was elected Congress President in an election against Gandhiji is not factually correct. The first time he was elected without any serious opposition. It was during this period that cracks developed in his relationship with Gandhiji. When he was up for re-election in 1939 Gandhiji was in open opposition to his candidature. As per his wish Dr.Pattabhi Sitaramaiyah was propped up as a candidate against Netaji. And of course, the entire force of the Gandhi-Nehru-Vallabhbhai block was thrown behind the puppet candidate. Despite that Netaji won easily. So a moral victory, definitely, but it was not an electoral victory.
